It's strange that such an entertaining and competently-made thriller was met on arrival with so many uninterested shrugs, especially in the United States. While people around the world went a little easier on Jodie Foster's timely thriller Money Monster, US critics pretty much savaged it. Did they see the same film?

Money Money is compulsive, edge-of-your-seat stuff, after all - a thriller driven by a simple premise (and dedicated performances) to a wholly satisfying conclusion. No, this isn't a masterpiece, but you don't get the sense it was ever supposed to be; Foster clearly set out to make an intelligent, gripping drama and that was it.

The plot, which focuses on a talk show host, played by George Clooney, who is held hostage by a disgruntled young man with a gun and an explosive device in his inventory, unravels like a more economically-minded Phone Booth - and Jack O'Connell, the disgruntled young man, does a fantastic job of emphasising an entire generation's worth of angst as he goes about his murderous objective.

Money Money is an attack on both the 24 hour news cycle and capitalism, a point which seemed to irk many Americans who deemed it to be too heavy-handed. Across the pond - namely in the United Kingdom - these criticisms were seen more like strengths, as Foster's film is clearly more tongue-in-cheek than it has been given credit for: surprising funny, frantic and very relevant.
