Transformers: The Last Knight is the best Transformers movie since the original. No, that's not a difficult accolade to achieve, given how awful the last three movies in the series were. But that's not all: watching The Last Knight, it's difficult not to feel as though the critics were set against Michael Bay's fourth sequel from the offset. Because this is a brilliant and wholly thrilling modern blockbuster, guys!

The Last Knight has been described by a lot of critics as one relentless explosion, where things like story and characters are eschewed in favour of fire and metal clashing at head-thumping levels. It's not an inaccurate description, exactly, but it's one that discredits Michael Bay's aim to offer audiences a two-hour motion picture where things explode and collide with a genuine, cinematic artistry.

Bay has never been given credit for his skills as a filmmaker - and the Transformers movies, for all their flaws, are superior in the way that action is presented. But whereas the elements have rarely gelled in previous instalments, here something just clicks. There is so much going on in The Last Knight, and the action sequences are so insane in terms of their construct and design, that it's pretty much impossible to sit through this movie without feeling awed by the sheer scope of it all.

This movie isn't concerned with anything other than blowing your face and ears into a zillion pieces. When it's done this well, though, with this much gusto, it only makes sense to bow down and surrender yourself.
