This recent drama got lost in all of the fluff and white noise of Oscar season but it is the rare biopic that actually transcends the cliches. Chronicling the iconic real-life tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, the film could have very easily plugged its key events into the time-tested sports movie formula and called it a day,

Instead, the film opts to dig deeper into the story and explore the real-life characters in a much more interesting way. The tennis is practically superfluous and the in-depth analysis of King and Riggs is the real meat of the film.

Emma Stone and Steve Carrell deliver standout performances and even the usual cinematic curse of Sarah Silverman actually delivers the goods. Directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, of Little Miss Sunshine fame, bring an endearing amount of heart to the story as it tackles issues of sexism and homophobia in a restrained and effective manner.
