Okay, it's a controversial one, no doubt, but stick with me.

The origin story of how Logan came to be the angry mutant we came to love isn't anywhere near as awful as people make out, and is actually a thoroughly entertaining movie from start to finish. It also helps to enjoy the film with either no prior knowledge or expectations of the character of Deadpool, as his treatment is the clear lowlight of the movie.

The film kicks off with a dazzling adventure through history, exploring Logan and his brother's efforts across a series of wars. The dynamic between the two is a central focus of the plot, with Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber bringing out great depth in both characters.

There is also a strong exploration of a love story between Logan and Kayla Silverfox, which delivers some nice twists throughout the film. Danny Huston hams it up beautifully as the villainous William Stryker, producing a performance every bit as good as Brian Cox's in X2.

There are some truly dark moments, including the murder of an elderly couple who try to assist Logan, while there are generally no loose ends in regards Wolverine's backstory. The final battle that sees Wolverine and the man who will become Sabretooth team up against Wade Wilson is actually not bad- it's just a shame they chose to sew Deadpool's mouth shut, an incredibly woeful decision.
