By far and away the best of the MIB movies, this movie proved to be exactly what we wanted from the franchise all along. The original MIB was fun enough thanks to Tommy Lee Jones' gruff Agent K and Will Smith's transition from everyday cop to fellow agent. The film's ending though caused major issues for the sequel, with too much time spent undoing Agent K's memory loss.

The third film in the series starts off innocuously, before a bold decision to kill off Jones' Agent K sends the film in bold new directions. Smith's Agent J finds himself transported back in time to meet and save a younger Agent K, who is being targeted by the monstrous alien Boris the Animal.

James Brolin nails the role of a younger Agent K, the right mix of youthful hope and the bland machinations we've come to expect of the character. There is a real sense of chemistry between Brolin and Smith and the mystery of how Agent K turned into such a miserably gruff old fella continues to raise its head as the two continue to bond.

The finale though is where the film shines, in one of the most unexpectedly heartbreaking climaxes you'll ever see. Watching the moment that forever changes Agent K is harrowing stuff, but also gives much greater depth to the previously caricatured nature of the protagonist.
