10 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of The Decade
8. Star Trek Beyond (2016)
After the Next Generation Star Trek movies lost their way, JJ Abrams' 2009 reboot and the follow-up Into Darkness offered an interesting new direction that might not have been entirely for Trek purists, but which understood sci-fi. In fact, without them, the new Star Wars movies might not have been possible in their current guise.
In the end, that franchise ended up badly let down by the financial performance of the third film (which was about as successful as the first two but which cost similarly vast amounts to make). $185m in budget alone sets a lot of expectations.
But Beyond is way better than anyone really seems to give it credit for. It feels closer to an Original Series episode than its preceding films and there's way more of a sense of fun, even with grave, dramatic stakes. Sure, it had its divisive moments, but it was bold and charming and had a great story and it deserved to be seen and cherished WAY more.
