10 Most Underrated Sci-Fi Movies Of The Decade
7. Kaboom (2010)
And now to the strangest movie on this list and possibly any list. Made by New Queer Cinema pioneer Gregg Araki (who now mostly directs TV shows like 13 Reasons Why, Riverdale and the preposterously under-valued Now Apocalypse), Kaboom grips you from the moment you hear it's a science fiction story focused on the sexual adventures of a group of college students and their investigation of a bizarre cult.
Part Dawson's Creek (with a far more indie edge and lots of Araki's trademark observations on sex and identity), it's a swirling mess of a plot that ends on one of the greatest middle finger salutes of any film ever. And once you realise that its mood and tone are not to be trusted or taken seriously at all, it's a heady, entertaining romp with a silly, subtly compelling premise and the same sort of dirty, rebellious feel as Kids only with way less nastiness.
