10 Most Underrated Star Wars Characters Ever
7. Shmi Skywalker
It's fair to say that The Phantom Menace isn't necessarily the owner of Star Wars' best collection of characters ever introduced to the franchise. Duds such as Nute Gunray, the 'death toll is catastrophic' guy and, of course, Jar Jar Binks all made their debut in the film, and even the introduction of new concepts such as the dreaded midichlorians were first heard about in the prequel trilogy's opening title.
With a film riddled with so many controversial discussions, it's easy to look past the genuinely good parts and solid performances that are in The Phantom Menace. One of the most underrated of these performances come from Pernilla August as Shmi Skywalker, Anakin's mother.
Not only does prove instrumental in Anakin's spiral towards the Dark Side, but her tenderness and selflessness is what keeps him on the right side of things for the entirety of his upbringing. Her sacrifice in letting her son go is genuinely a heartbreaking concept when fans stop to think about it, something she does in an absolute heartbeat, and August's performance is way too good to just be forgotten about anytime soon.
