9. The Scrunt - Lady In The Water

You can always count on M. Night Shyamalan to divide opinion and his film Lady in the Water from 2006 is one of his most criticised ever.

Starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Paul Giamatti among others, it tells the tale of an ordinary man who discovers a water nymph living in an apartment block swimming pool and must protect her from an evil being that is pursuing her.

This being is called… a Scrunt. Hardly the most terrifying name, is it?

As well as not being scary to talk about, the Scrunt is also not massively frightening to look at. Upon catching a glimpse of it early in the film, audiences were less than thrilled to discover that the main villain of the movie they were watching was a wolf covered in grass.

That might sound flippant, but that’s literally all it is. It’s a wolf-like creature with grassy fur that it uses for camouflage, which sounds like a rejected idea for a Pokemon.

The Scrunt is one of the many things wrong with Lady in the Water, which marked a considerable downturn in fortune for this once-heralded director.
