10 Most Unexpectedly Awesome Movies Of 2015 (So Far)
3. It Follows
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 96% Reading the plot synopsis for It Follows - "after a strange sexual encounter, a teenager finds herself haunted by nightmarish visions and the inescapable sense that something is after her" - one could certainly be forgiven for assuming it to be another in a long line of boring horror flicks in which dumb teenagers succumb to a series of brutal deaths. And yet, It Follows couldn't be further away from that. Instead, it's one of the best horror films in years - a genuine original, and outright terrifying to boot. Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, this moody and atmospheric chiller stars the wonderful Maiki Monroe as an unlucky teen who finds herself plagued by evil visions. Mitchell's main focus is on creating a tense, '80s-inspired tone, but the film manages to transcend all expectations you have for it on account of sheer craft: it is a love letter to the genre, and to the cinema in general. Spooky as hell, it will also linger with you for weeks.
Sam Hill is an ardent cinephile and has been writing about film professionally since 2008. He harbours a particular fondness for western and sci-fi movies.
