8. Clint v Natasha - The Avengers

Remember when we were all begging to know what happened in Budapest? When Hawkeye was reduced to a brief cameo in Thor’s first cinematic outing? When we had no idea about playing the role of auntie to Clint’s little kids? No, there was once a time when all we knew was that Black Widow and Hawkeye had unfinished business - Romanoff owed Barton a debt, some red in her ledger she needed to wipe out. So how, having Romanoff and Barton’s first on screen interaction be a fist fight seems now equal parts ridiculous and wholly fitting for their relationship.

Nat tried to and succeeded in rewiring a hypnotised Hawkeye doing Loki’s bidding during the spat on the helicarrier in The Avengers. What we got answers the question of what happens when two of SHIELD’s most esteemed agents go head to head: it appears to be a lot of hair-pulling and biting.

Not exactly the high-stakes match we might have imagined, but it was nevertheless entertaining to see two such nimble, skilled fighters take each other on.

It makes it all the more fitting that their last on-screen appearance together in Endgame appeared to be a reprise of this: perhaps that should have clued us in that Natasha Romanoff would repay Clint Barton’s debt eventually.
