6. Louis Creed - Pet Sematary

Pet Sematary is essentially a tale about grief, or to be more specific, about how experiencing grief is unfortunately an inevitable part of life that we can't run away from.

When the Creed family move from busy Chicago to rural Maine, their new neighbour Jud - played by a magnificent Fred Gwynne - introduces them to a pet cemetery that lies in the woods behind their house. And it's not long before these woods becomes the downfall of the Creed clan.

Once the Creed's cat Church is killed after being hit by a trick, panicked family patriarch Louis is worried about how his young daughter Ellie will react to this death. Seeking advice from Jud, Louis is taken past the pet cemetery and to a Mi'kmaq burial ground. Instructed to bury the deceased pet there, but also sworn to secrecy about this, Louis is greeted the next day by the resurrected Church; a Church who's aggressive, unkempt, and has glowing eyes - which is, of course, always a good sign.

When Ellie's younger brother Gage is likewise hit and killed by a passing truck, rather than deal with that death and the grief that comes with it, Louis digs up his dead son and re-buries him in the creepy ancient burial ground. With that, Gage returns as a vicious, murderous figure.

So, when Gage kills his own mother, Rachel, what does Louis do? Why, he obviously buries her in that same spot, because what could go wrong?

There is clearly some sense of sympathy towards Louis Creed, but it's hard to have too much sympathy for him when he makes the same mistake time and time again, bringing on even more misery for himself rather than facing up to grief.
