6. Ellen Ripley - Alien

A lowly space-trucker on a deep space job, Ellen Ripley (the iconic Sigourney Weaver) is initially a far cry from the hardened survivor we meet in Aliens through to Alien: Resurrection. When she and her crewmates answer a distress signal on a distant planet, they encounter the deadly Xenomorph - which finds its way onto their ship by burrowing deep inside Kane (John Hurt).

Ripley would emerge as the sole survivor (not counting the cat) of the Nostromo's alien encounter, but this would be far from the last of it. Time and time again, Ripley's life would be derailed by the titular alien - the creatures killing everything and everyone she dared befriend.

After narrowly escaping a doomed colony with her life, she would find herself alone on a prison planet, with only the inmates and a brand-new Xenomorph for company. Here she would die, only to be cloned and tormented afresh in Alien: Resurrection.
