10 Most Unnecessarily Hated Characters In Film History

8. Johnny Lawerence - The Karate Kid

Norman Bates Psycho
Columbia Pictures

This character played by Billy Zabka always copped a lot more flack than he should of, as was brilliantly and hilariously pointed out in the sit-com How I Met Your Mother. While Johnny Lawerence definitely wasn't the nicest teenager going around, we've all have our bad moments during our formative years.

But while poor young Johnny got cast as the villain for his bullying ways over the film's hero, Daniel LaRusso, the real enemy was in fact his sensei, the despicable John Kreese. I mean what kind of man can't guarantee that his students won't stop beating up on an innocent teen? That is seriously messed up stuff.

Johnny though is a character who develops as the film progresses, his obvious unease at targeting Daniel's injury in their final battle evidence of this. Johnny is also a really good loser, personally handing Daniel his trophy for winning the tournament, despite being beaten with what was clearly an illegal move.

The new found love for Johnny has been found in the Youtube series Cobra Kai, with Johnny's iteration of the very Mr Miyagi like sensei actually a positive influence for his students. His rivalry with Daniel may be rekindled, but there's no sense of a hero/villain dynamic, instead two men struggling to get over their past.
