10 Most Unnecessarily Hated Characters In Film History
7. Head Zombie - I Am Legend
We have the terrible ending for this 2007 flick to blame for the hate directed to the head zombie in this film, who in the initial ending wasn't a villain at all. But before that, the first two and a half acts of I am Legend is amazing stuff, with Will Smith's Dr. Robert Neville doing everything in his power to 'cure' the zombie virus.
The motif of butterflies signifying the Zombies adaptation and growth is incorporated throughout the film, their increased ability to adapt to the light and set traps evidence of this. Sadly the final product deleted the most important development, that the new species had also learnt to love.
In the film's finale, Dr Neville is experimenting on a female zombie when the head zombie comes a visiting. In the theatrical cut, the doctor has managed to find a cure, and tries to explain this to the rage filled head zombie. Unable to calm the zombie down, Dr Neville instead chooses to blow himself up, as well as the 'cured' patient and head zombie.
The initial product was much more nuanced, with Dr Neville realising that the cured patient is actually the head zombie's loving partner. Neville 'withdraws' the cure and releases the patient, allowing the two in love zombies to be together. It is a beautiful ending that beautifully unpacks the butterfly motifs and overall themes of the film. It also makes sense of the head zombie's actions, as wouldn't we all tear down the world for those that we love?
