10 Most Useless Star Wars Characters

4. Rose Tico

Star Wars The Force Awakens Finn Captain Phasma

One of the most controversial aspects of The Last Jedi was the depiction of characters, both old and new. One character who was a large part of this controversy was Resistance technician Rose Tico.

Strangely enough, writer/director Rian Johnson wrote Tico to inadvertently disrupt and endanger the Resistance cause, particularly during the end of the film. At the movie's climax, looking like all alternatives were exhausted, Finn made the brave decision to sacrifice himself by ramming his speeder into the First Order's battering ram cannon, which was charging up to destroy the wall of the last defence base the Resistance had. Instead of allowing Finn to sacrifice himself for the greater good, Rose crashed her speeder into Finn's at such a high speed, the crash could have killed them both. In the aftermath, Finn yells at Tico, questioning her actions, to which Rose responds the only way the Resistance would win the war would not be by "fighting what we hate, but saving what we love".

Whilst this may sound nice, that sentence does not make sense when you pick it apart. These two aspects are not mutually exclusive, with the film itself even disproving Rose. The previous scene saw Admiral Holdo saving what she loved by fighting what she hated, destroying herself and the First Order ships through lightspeed ramming the Resistance ship into the First Order's Star Destroyers. So, this tone-deaf character moment is clearly what generated the most confusion and distaste for Rose amongst fans.

Instead of trying to fix the character, Disney chose to push Rose aside in The Rise of Skywalker, excluding her from the core group and offering nothing to the overall story. So, because of her actions and her unfortunate characterisation, Rose Tico deserves the title as one of the most useless characters in Star Wars.
