10 Most Visually Stunning Horror Movies Ever
1. Suspiria
One of the last films made in Technicolor, Suspiria's vibrant colors and warped imagery make it impossible to forget. The film follows a ballet student who enrolls in a dance academy, only to discover something is off about her new school. The interior of the school is its own reality with its own rules, much like Ofelia's underworld and Génessier's mansion.
During the few sequences that take place outside, the cinematography doesn't stand out whatsoever. Once we go inside, though, every inch is lit up with red or blue, the architecture is strange and warped like in Dr. Caligari, the wallpaper is bizarre, and the whole thing just feels like something you'd dream up and then reflect on later as being profoundly strange. The red in particular always seems to be coming for these characters much like the mysterious evil presence. In one sequence, all of the girls sleep in the middle of the practice hall surrounded by a large sheet, and the red light from outside seeps in like an oppressive force. Blue is utilized effectively as well, suggesting a dual nature to this place: what it appears to be on the surface, and what the adults are really up to.
Narratively, the movie can be kind of a mess, but as a pure sensory experience, Suspiria is nothing short of a masterpiece.
