10 Most Visually Stunning Horror Movies Ever
7. It Follows
From director David Robert Mitchell and cinematographer Mike Gioulakis, It Follows should be watched even by non-horror fans because it's truly one of the best looking movies of 2015. That might sound like an odd thing to say about a film where the monster is never shown, but every frame of It Follows tells a minimalist story of its very own.
It Follows is largely about isolation and paranoia brought on by a massive betrayal. Jay goes through this in the first act, and afterwards she can never be sure that any person on the street isn't a creature trying to kill her. We get that right from the opening scene, where an unnamed girl stands in the middle of the street fearing for her life. All around her is a quiet, suburban neighborhood, to her right is a woman unpacking groceries, and none of them can possibly help or understand her.
Gioulakis paints a picture of an innocent town where our sense of comfort is completely violated. Additionally, the bright colors of Jay's room stand out next to the drab scenery in the bad part of town, as if she's quickly being forced to confront the real world. It's a dazzling film about that divide between innocence and corruption, and between trust and betrayal, all without any characters needing to explain that to us.
