10 Most Woefully Lame Video Nasties

3. Blood Rites/The Ghastly Ones (1968)

Andy Milligan's directorial debut is a pile of dung. From what can be discerned from the film, there are three sisters who are called to a big house to take a share of their inheritance, but someone wants it all for themselves and people get knocked off. It is unbelievable that a film of such poor quality and which is so inept managed to be released. An apparent costume drama, continuity, decent sound and photography, basically anything that makes a watchable film is thrown out of the window. The gore is ambitious but very poorly executed, with Milligan's camera doing a weird swirling motion that looks like he is trying to cover up how crap everything is. The film, largely because of its flaws, is a surreal viewing experience. The characters bitch and whine at length about each other, but the sound is so poor, it is hard to hear what the characters are saying. In any case, it appears that Milligan was improvising things as he went along - the viewer can even hear him shouting directions at the actors. It sounds like great fun on paper, but one for Andy Milligan enthusiasts only - all 12 of you.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
