Silly sci-fi horror from Luigi Cozzi, Italian hack director, Contamination has one good idea that it uses over and over again. A bit like gore guru Lucio Fulci's Zombie Flesh Eaters, a boat floats into New York with green eggs hidden among some coffee. It turns out that these eggs blow up at the correct temperature and they cover people in goo, which causes their intestines to explode. Contamination also takes Ian McCulloch from Zombie Flesh Eaters and casts him as an alcoholic ex-astronaut. A blatant attempt to replicate the success of Alien, this Italian rip-off has a horrible score from Goblin and uses the exploding torso idea over and over again to the point of boredom. As the film goes along, the special effects start to get lazy and the film has no directorial flair whatsoever (it's also full of plot holes). Now released in Britain with an uncut 15 certificate, one wonders what all the fuss was about back in 1983?
My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
