10 Most WTF Horror Movie Endings
1. The Borderlands (2013)
Also known as Final Prayer in the US, writer-director Elliot Goldner’s The Borderlands is a criminally underrated found footage flick that follows three men sent by the Vatican to investigate reports of supernatural activity at an old church in the English countryside. Their job is to determine whether the tremors experienced there are a genuine miracle or a hoax.
However, it doesn’t long for them to realise that something profoundly more sinister is happening, as their recording equipment picks up sounds of low grumbles and children crying. Likewise, they discover an ominous hidden passage descending into the darkness and learn more about the church's macabre pagan history of human sacrifice.
After an exorcism goes awry, the men are eventually forced to enter the passageway where they discover the skeletons of small children. As they descend deeper the passage grows narrower and slimier. In a harrowing twist it's revealed that the men have found themselves in the stomach of a god, with the final shots depicting their agonised screams as their flesh is burned away.
Whether understood as a biting metaphor for the consuming nature of religion or as purely a Lovecraftian nightmare, this stomach-churning finale will remain with viewers for a long time.
