2. The Witch (2015)
After being banished from their settlement, a Puritan family are forced to make a new life for themselves on the edge of a foreboding forest in Robert Eggers’ critically adored feature debut. However, things only become worse when a witch living in the neighbouring woods begins to torment the family.
From here, The Witch becomes a taut, slow-burn chiller as paranoia and superstition create tension between the group, with the eldest daughter Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy) being accused of being the witch. The suspense continues to escalate until an explosive act of violence leaves the teenager as the sole survivor.
That night, she follows the family’s goat Black Philip into the shed to ask if he really is the devil as her siblings claimed. He answers by offering her a life of luxury if she signs his book, before leading her into the forest naked towards the sound of distant chanting.
While the disembodied whisper of Philip already makes this scene an unnerving ordeal, it’s composer Mark Korven’s score which elevates the finale into pure heart-pounding terror.
Now finding herself in a witches’ coven, Thomasin raises her arms and levitates into the air as the score reaches its sinister crescendo and cuts to black.
