10 Most WTF Opening Scenes From Recent Movies

M3GAN's opening four minutes so perfectly encapsulate what a tightly calibrated dark comedy it is.

The film begins with an in-universe commercial for Purrpetual Petz, a Furby-esque toy from toy company Funki.

The hilariously over-the-top yet totally believable ad shows it helping a child deal with the death of her dog and its various "smart" functions, before the scene abruptly segues to eight-year-old protagonist Cady (Violet McGraw), who is riding in the back of her parents' car with one of the "Petz."

But soon enough, in the middle of an argument, the car is hit by an oncoming snow plow, killing Cady's parents and setting the rest of the movie in motion.

The tonal whiplash from the bright and bubbly toy commercial to the bleak reality of Cady's life is clearly intentionally jarring, and efficiently lets audiences know precisely what to expect for the remainder, assuring them that, yes, the movie is totally in on the joke.
