David Duchovny has won Golden Globes for his iconic and unforgettable performances in The X-Files and Californication, and 2020 saw him appear in his first movie role in seven years since drama Louder Than Words way back in 2013.

In Blumhouse's reboot-sequel of '90s teen classic The Craft, Duchovny plays Adam Harrison, the boyfriend of protagonist Lily's (Cailee Spaeny) mother Helen (Michelle Monaghan).

Now, Duchovny is an actor whose strengths lie in playing laid-back, affable characters - not high-energy psychopaths, which is perhaps why he felt the desire to try something new by playing the villain in The Craft: Legacy.

Indeed, the film's not-so-surprising third act twist is that Adam is the primary antagonist, a pagan zealot who wishes to take Lily's powers for himself.

Except Duchovny just isn't menacing in the slightest, which in conjunction with a finale awash in garish, cheap CGI, makes his placement as the Big Bad utterly laughable.

Hopefully the mediocre reception to the film won't dissuade Duchovny away from the movies, though, because he's clearly capable of so much more when the script's right.
