Who knew that a 90's teen drama would give the world two exceptionally gifted actors? My So Called Life covered some serious topics back in the day and gave the world its first real glimpse of the fantastically eccentric Jared Leto and three time Emmy, four time Golden Globe and two time Screen Actors Guild Award winner: Claire Danes.

Truthfully, many won't have seen Danes' best work either for a very long time or at all as the actress has a relatively short filmography by comparison to others on this list but it is all but certain that almost everyone will be familiar with at least some of Danes' roles.

For example, Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet saw Danes cast in the titular female role and went a long way towards catapulting her and fellow lead Leonardo DiCaprio to global fame. However, the modern take on Shakespeare's epic romance is far from Danes' finest hour as she has acquitted herself more than deserving of her accolades by portraying an enormous wealth of characters.

Danes has been fortunate to play both the damsel in films such as Stardust and also hard-hitting protagonists in more recent times - Carrie Mathison in Homeland immediately springs to mind - showing she can work virtually the entire spectrum of characters.

If only she could play a villain to really complete the set.
