9. Harry Potter

It was widely expected that Harry Potter would likely die at the end of J.K. Rowling's mammoth fantasy franchise, and frankly, he probably should have as well, even if it is a bit ordinary and predictable for stories such as this. Still, the story made it clear that in order for Voldemort to die, so too would Harry, and it seemed prophetic enough that these two forces would have to cancel each other out in order for the world to survive. Rowling nearly goes through with it; Harry "dies" and even gets to see Dumbledore in the afterlife, before the author chickens out and sends him back down to Earth, living and well. Many fans took umbrage with it because it just doesn't follow that Harry would vanquish Voldemort and then live a normal life. Surely there would be more evil to take down at some point in the future? The thought of Harry getting a pot belly like Ron and becoming an old fart in comfort is a less-desirable thought than him dying honourably in combat. Harsh? Probably, but true.
