Fantasy Casting: Tilda Swinton

David Bowie is one of music’s most compelling characters and is surely a shoo-in for a huge Hollywood biopic. His legend lives on, his music is still beloved, but a lot of his greatest accomplishments are unknown to the current generation.

Moreso even than Prince, a Bowie biopic would nestle alongside Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman in the current Hollywood canon. Exploring Bowie’s sexuality, self-expression and cutting edge, ground-breaking influence could offer a movie to rival Walk The Line.

Just like Johnny Cash though, Bowie’s life was not without its turbulence. His first marriage was an open relationship, with his then-wife even alleging the singer was involved with Mick Jagger.

His religion and politics offer a rich subject matter too; Bowie flipped between Buddhism, Christianity and agnosticism for most of his life. Also, while his later work was explicitly antifascist and antiracist, younger Bowie made tongue in cheek remarks about supporting Hitler; a complex musician indeed.

As for Tilda Swinton, it’s certainly out of left-field, but isn’t that just perfect for Bowie? She has the look down, Bowie’s ethereal presence, and with performances in Doctor Strange and Orlando under her belt, she’s certainly used to unusual characters.
