10 Movie Biopics That Lied To Your Face
7. The Blind Side
Alongside the same year's The Help, 2009's The Blind Side is a well-meaning but deeply misguided and self-congratulatory attempt at addressing racism through the perspective of the most aggrieved party, an upper class white woman.
Starring Sandra Bullock, the film follows the apparently true-to-life story of a well-meaning suburban mom who adopted a homeless black teenager and moulded him into a sporting superstar.
Wait, you may be wondering. Did she really know more about football than him?
She sure did, according to the film's version of things. According to the actual Michael Oher, the former NFL star upon whose life the film is ostensibly based, he was actually the driving force behind his football success.
Whilst Oher thanked his adopted family for their help and hospitality, he felt the film dismissed the hard work which had seen him already scouted before he ever met the selfless heroine Bullock portrays. Many commenters familiar with the player also noted that the film turned the outspoken and charming figure into a meek near-mute so as not to outshine Bullock's performance.
Fitting, really.
