Released in 1984, Amadeus is arguably director Milos Forman's masterpiece.

The tragic tale of the young, doomed musical prodigy Mozart, the film follows his fast-paced rise to superstardom through the eyes of his bitter, far older rival composer Salieri. Played by a terrifying F Murray Abraham, Salieri is a tragic figure in the film, a bachelor who time has forgotten and the world of music has left behind.

As such, it's only natural that he becomes deeply jealous of this young upstart Mozart, who moves at lightning pace from being his protege to mocking him and outclassing him at every turn.

It's a mesmerising story of deceit, obsession, and envy, and a superb film.

It's also all bull.

By the time he met Mozart, Salieri was far from lonely as a married man with eight children (so, probably not the frigid figure that the film makes him out to be either). He and Mozart were close friends at the time of the star's tragically young death, and whilst Salieri never reached the fame and acclaim enjoyed by Mozart he was more than well-regarded in his own time.
