10 Movie Biopics That Lied To Your Face
5. Cool Runnings
Released in 1993, the sports comedy Cool Runnings is a feel good classic. Featuring hilarious turns from the legendary John Candy and Doug E. Doug, the film is essentially a string of hilarious montages as the country of Jamaica attempts to corral together its first competitive bobsled team.
In the film's version of events the competitors are a loose assemblage of random no-hopers who fundraise for their Olympic goal via all manner of goofy shenanigans. After these exploits, they are coached to success by Candy's scandal-stricken former Olympic coach. The movie sees them struggle before succeeding beyond all expectations, especially after a frosty reception (hoho) from the other teams.
However in reality the team had some US corporate money backing them and a string of different coaches, none of whom were scandal-struck. As for the bobsledders themselves? They were recruited from the country's Air Force sprinters.
And the rest of the teams trying to laugh them out of the competition? Not only were their competitors friendly, the US team went so far as to loan them a backup sled to save them the cost of buying another team's.
