10 Movie Characters Killed In Reshoots
1. Robert Neville - I Am Legend
15 years later, this one still pisses a lot of people off.
I Am Legend is a mostly terrific post-apocalyptic thriller in which a virologist, Robert Neville (Will Smith), is apparently the only remaining human on Earth.
He's pursued throughout the film by cannibalistic mutants known as the Darkseekers, and at the end of the story Neville sacrifices himself, running towards the attacking Darkseekers while holding a live grenade in order to preserve a cure he thought they were about to destroy.
This was a reshoot, though, and deviated significantly from the ending of Richard Matheson's original book.
Test audiences hated the more source-faithful original ending, where Neville realises that the Darkseekers are more intelligent and emotionally engaged than he believed, and that they view him as a monster for his experiments upon them.
It's a brilliantly contemplative ending, and predictably one that unimaginative test audiences recoiled at for its thoughtfulness and moral ambiguity. Instead, they made poor Francis Lawrence shoot a new ending with more bang-bang 'splosions.
