10 Movie Characters Pointlessly Forced Into Sequels

2. Agent Smith - The Matrix

Agent Smith is up there as one of the top film villains - well, as long as you only count his appearance in the first Matrix film, anyway. There he is an omnipresent, oppressive force of power and authoritarianism. He is inhuman and monstrous - he is everyone and he is everything.

Then, he dies when Neo flies into him and blows him up, distorting the Matrix itself. He's back in the next one though - better than ever - which wasn't the original plan, but then nothing in the sequels was the plan.

Originally, the next film was going to be a prequel, but instead of that, the studio wanted the Wachowski Sisters to make another movie following the adventures of Neo and his friends. So they obliged, begrudgingly.

It works, for the most part. It's obviously not the story they wanted to tell, but it's still decent, except for Smith. He's such a radically different character that it makes more sense for him to be a different character altogether.

He was only in the movie so all the fanboys would go, "WOO, AGENT SMITH," and buy movie tickets. So while Agent Smith was the most pointlessly forced character, in the end all of the original Matrix characters were pointlessly forced into the sequels.

Tara Giovannini hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
