Typically in any story, there needs to be a protagonist for the audience to root for, however this isn't always the case. There are some where there are no likeable characters at all, one of which, along with How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, being Gone Girl.

David Fincher produced an outstanding film when he adapted Gillian Flynn's novel in 2014, but it's not the easiest watch in the world. Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) is very clearly a bad husband, while Amy (Rosamund Pike) is a manipulative liar who tried to frame him for her own murder.

Faking her own disappearance was ultimately supposed to lead to Nick's imprisonment, as payback for his cheating, however she changed her mind when she saw him on TV. Nick was playing the character of faithful and caring husband during the appeals for information about Amy, which was the side of him she wanted.

Here is where the manipulation was taken to another level. After murdering Desi Collins (Neil Patrick Harris) and subsequently framing him for her kidnap, Amy went home to Nick, and explained everything. Knowing that he wouldn't ever stay with her after this, she revealed that she was pregnant after inseminating herself with Nick's sperm, giving her husband a reason, and almost an obligation, to stick around with her and play the part she wanted.

Emotional manipulation and blackmail aren't typically found anywhere near happy endings, but that was the price for Amy to get hers.
