10 Movie Characters Who Broke Their Own Rules
Was there ever a rule Doctor Strange didn't break?
Playing by the rules isn't for everyone. When it comes to movies, there are always villainous lawbreakers happy to do anything they need to get on top, and there's potentially a chance the hero will have to bend a rule or two in order to compete with such a rival.
But there are levels to rule-breaking. It's one thing to disregard those limits you have no control over, but going against rules you have imposed on yourself, or that you follow out of choice, is something entirely different, often born out of desperation or anger.
These could be ethical guidelines, moral codes, rules for survival or protection, safety protocols, or even just simple personal beliefs, no matter the motivation behind them. Characters, whether good, bad, or somewhere in between, may put them in place with the best of intentions, but it's not exactly uncommon to see them broken by the very people who created them.
From intentionally bringing a horde of killer aliens down on them, putting their lives in danger to impress a woman, or doing everything necessary to stay alive, characters have contradicted themselves with varying levels of success, to say the least.
10. Lee Abbott - A Quiet Place
When living in a world in which even the slightest sound could bring down a vicious alien killing machine upon you with no remorse, there is one key and literally unspoken rule: don't make a sound.
A Quiet Place gave a horrifying example of what could happen should this rule be broken right at the very start, when Beau (Cade Woodward), the youngest child of the Abbott family, fired up his new toy rocket and was brutally killed for it.
Extreme lengths had to be taken in order to survive in this world, particularly when you throw in the wild card of a newborn baby, but everything comes back to being silent. Beau wasn't the only Abbott who broke this rule, however, as Lee (John Krasinski), the father of the family, made the ultimate sacrifice by shouting as loud as he could.
With the monsters bearing down on his children, this was about the only thing Lee could do to save them, and in doing so gave his life for them. It was an incredibly solemn and heart-wrenching moment, and something that any father would do for their children in a heartbeat.
