10 Movie Characters Who Had To Kill Themselves To Win

1. Nebula - Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame's time travel shenanigans naturally invite the possibility of the superheroes battling alternate versions of themselves, and the film ultimately gives us not only 2023 Captain America (Chris Evans) vs. 2012 Captain America, but also 2023 Nebula (Karen Gillan) vs. 2014 Nebula.

The latter battle ends up having fatal consequences, as the 2014 Nebula acts as a saboteur for Thanos (Josh Brolin), assuming the identity of her future self and helping the Mad Titan's army travel from 2014 to 2023.

But when past Nebula tries to steal the Infinity Gauntlet from Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), she finds herself confronted by Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and her future self.

Though the contemporary, benevolent-ish Nebula tries to convince her past self of her better nature, Evil Nebula ignores her and moves to shoot Gamora, prompting her future self to coldly shoot her dead.

Yet as the film makes pains to explain, the conventional causal laws of time travel don't apply here, and so 2023 Nebula doesn't wipe herself out of existence by killing her 2014 self - it simply generates another branching, alternate universe where Nebula is dead in 2014.
