10 Movie Characters Who Just Needed To Listen To Reason

5. Apollo Creed - Rocky IV

There was a time when Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) was widely viewed as the greatest boxer in the world. He was the Heavyweight Champion when he gave Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) a shot at his title in the original 1977 film, and he fought at the highest level through until the day he retired.

Even after winning the fight in the first Rocky movie, though, Apollo wasn't happy with the way that he won, and wanted a chance to beat his opponent properly. Such was the fighting spirit of the Champ.

However, in Rocky IV when he wanted to go toe-to-toe with Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) in an exhibition match, Rock was forced to remind him that he wasn't the same fighter he used to be. He had been retired for five years at this point after all, while the Russian boxer was basically a machine.

His promoters simply wanted to put on a display of his freakish power, for which Apollo was no match, but he wasn't about to listen. Boxing was more than his career, it was his lifestyle, and he struggled with the idea of letting it go.

Ultimately, the same passion and intensity that made him such a good fighter in the first place won over, with his pride and ego, and no small amount of patriotism, essentially sending him into that ring to die. This fight took on the same underdog-style story as the first movie, with Apollo himself switching roles, but unfortunately, David doesn't always defeat Goliath.
