5. Llewelyn Moss - No Country For Old Men

The human conscience sure is a pain in the ass, huh?

In the Coen brothers' Oscar-winning crime thriller No Country for Old Men, protagonist Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) stumbles upon the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong, namely a briefcase containing $2 million in cash.

Moss promptly takes the money and scarpers home, but can't shake the fact that he saw one of the men was still alive, begging for water, and knowingly left him there to die.

And so, Moss returns to the site later that evening to bring the wounded man some water, yet the man has since died, and Moss consequently finds himself being pursued by a group of Mexicans not best pleased that he took off with their money.

Now to be clear, the bag of money had a transponder in it regardless, which helped villain Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) track Moss down, but given that Moss is ultimately killed by the Mexicans rather than Chigurh, his act of returning to the scene is what ultimately put them on his tail.

Moss surely knew in his heart of hearts that the wounded man would almost certainly not have survived his grim injuries into the night, but overpowering guilt pushed him to take a look anyway, and it basically cost him his own life.
