10. T-800 - Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Terminator 2: Judgement Day saw a reprogrammed T-800 travelling back in time to protect John Connor from a more advanced time-travelling Terminator - the liquid metal, shapeshifting T-1000. After successfully defeating Robert Patrick - and having learned some human emotions along the way - the T-800 explained that, in order to ensure the success of its mission, it must also be destroyed so that no Terminator technology exists at this point in the timeline and asks to be lowered into a vat of liquid metal (as it can't self-terminate), giving one last thumbs up before shutting down. However, everything bad that it was trying to prevent happened in the future anyway, so its mission and its sacrifice were ultimately pointless - John Connor could have had its protection for longer.
