9. Dick Hallorann - The Shining

The Shining sees Jack Torrance and his family keeping watch at the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado during the winter off-season. The hotel is, however, haunted by evil spirits who manipulate Jack into murdering his family. Dick Halloran, a chef in the hotel, happens to have psychic abilities and, whilst holidaying in Florida at the same time that the Torrance family are keeping watch at the Overlook Hotel, he senses that something terrible is going on. He takes a flight to Colorado, then uses a snowcat to reach the hotel in order to warn the Torrance family of what is happening. But he is then killed by Jack almost immediately after he arrives, receiving an axe to the heart for his troubles. His visit might have been with good intentions, but it not only helped nobody, it also wasted time that could have been spent calling Colorado police to investigate the scene instead. They could have got to the hotel a hell of a lot quicker than he did and they certainly would have been better equipped to defend themselves against an axe-wielding Jack than he was.
