10 Movie Characters Who Should Never Have Died
5. Donna - Mamma Mia 2
Pierce Brosnan's singing aside, Mamma Mia was a fairly fun, lighthearted homage featuring some colourful characters and the best of Abba's huge collection of karaoke hits. One of the best characters in the film was leading lady Donna, played by the always brilliant Meryl Streep; not only was she one of the movie's best singers, but her character really encapsulated the care-free, cheery feel of the film.
Given the fact that she was literally at the heart of everything in the first film, it was a bit of a surprise for audiences to learn that she had died offscreen in the time between Mamma Mia and its sequel, Mamma Mia 2.
Whilst the film does shoehorn in the odd reference here and there to Donna and somewhat shows life on the island struggling through without here, the whole death is made completely redundant by the fact that Donna keeps turning up throughout the film. From about the halfway point onwards, Donna turns in dream sequences and then joins in with a big musical finale.
If the screenwriters were planning on making use of Meryl Streep so much in Mamma Mia 2, why did they decide to try and work in a strange offscreen death for her character?
