Deemed too depressing for audiences, Rambo's original ending - which sees him take his own life - was changed from the novel to have John Rambo surrender into Colonel Trautman's custody, peacefully ending his righteous rampage. A happier ending, and one which led to plenty more Rambo sequels, but one at odds with the rest of the film and its powerful message.

Certainly, John Rambo deserved better than death, but it would have made a far more potent sting to his tale than having the damaged veteran live to fight again... and again... and again, ever more implausibly and against the grain. At the very least, it would have put a stop to Rambo: the Animated Series.
