2. Ernst Blofeld - No Time To Die

Hugo Weaving The Matrix

What started out as a massively intriguing piece of casting will now no doubt go down in history as one of the oddest failures the 007 franchise has ever known.

After delicious turns as a scene-chewing Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds and an equally impressive commanding of the screen in Django Unchained as Dr. King Schultz, Christoph Waltz being thrown into the world of James Bond as Spectre's worst kept secret, Ernst Blodfeld, seemed like a brilliant no-brainer.

Yet, a forgettable first dance with his adopted brother was ultimately followed up by another appearance in No Time to Die. Surely now Waltz would finally be given some time to shine and flex the villainous muscles that initially brought him to the iconic table, right? Sadly, in a moment that pretty much sums up his deflating run as part of the franchise, Blofeld's most memorable beat in the sequel comes when he succumbs to an accidental death at the hands of Bond thanks to a DNA-based bioweapon.

For a role and actor that once appeared to be a match made in heaven, the record will always show that this combo never really got the chance to be anything more than a moustache-twiddling damp squib.
