Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven is a gorgeous mess of a movie, and absolutely a film that benefits enormously from watching its effortlessly superior Director's Cut.

But even the three-plus-hour extended version doesn't explain the sudden, bizarre disappearance of a notable supporting character - the English Sergeant played by Kevin McKidd.

The Sergeant is one of Balian's (Orlando Bloom) likeable pals who appears to be ready to accompany him to the Holy Land, and yet, once Balian takes a ship to Jerusalem, he's never seen again.

Some have suggested that he may have been one of the casualties of the shipwreck during Balian's journey to Jerusalem - of which Balian was the only survivor - yet this isn't in any way indicated in the movie itself.

On the home video release, it's stated that a dummy of McKidd was made for the shipwreck scene, implying that he was intended to die, yet going by what we actually see on-screen, it's just as easy to believe that he simply never got on the boat and stayed in Messina.

Either way, given that the Sergeant was supposedly Balian's confidante, he clearly deserved some sort of notable send-off rather than, well, nothing.
