10 Movie Characters Whose Fates Were Left Frustratingly Unresolved

7. Jack - The Shining

Midsommar Florence Pugh
Warner Bros.

Okay, this is definitely one of the more "WTF" endings on this list, and in movie history in general. On the face of it, it's quite concrete that, because Jack has frozen to death. It SHOULD be clear as day. He is now a human flavoured ice lolly. But this is The Shining and this is Stanley Kubrick, so nothing is straight forward.

Driven absolutely mad by mysterious forces at the Overlook Hotel, Jack begins a murderous rampage against his family. Jack only manages to kill one person on this rampage (poor old Dick), but still its a rampage nonetheless. He chases his wife and son into a maze struck with a blizzard, and he soon loses them, gets lost, and freezes to death without much ceremony at all.

Simple right? Well, no, because that's not the final shot. The final shot, famously is of Jack seemingly in the middle of a party in the 1920s.

Now, Kubrick said himself that the photo suggests that Jack was a reincarnation of a previous worker of the hotel, but many a theory has come about since the release of the movie. Is Jack a time traveller? Is he in possession of the Time Stone? Has the hotel absorbed him? Is he Charles Grady? Is anything real?
