Ash Williams is the iconic protagonist of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy, but when the series began in 1981, the character was not the hero audiences now know and love.

To begin with, Ash is called by his full first name, 'Ashley', for most of the film. At the same time, the character is meek, bookish, and freezes during tense and horrific moments. It isn't until later, when most of the cast has been turned into Deadites, that Ash steps up to be the final boy of the movie.

Though Evil Dead 2 would later start tweaking the character, it would take Army of Darkness to give fans the definitive portrayal of Ash Williams. The character is retooled as a wise-cracking jerk with a heart of gold who occasionally bumbles his way into trouble. The movie is filled with iconic lines from the horror legend while his comedic traits are dialled up to 11; a far cry from the shrinking violet of the original film.

This change in personality would help audiences endear to Bruce Campbell's character, and this portrayal would carry over to the underrated series, Ash vs. Evil Dead.
