Picture the scene: you're part of a vastly technologically superior race who are in the midst of invading Earth, safe in the knowledge that not only are you protected by an extremely reliable force field, but you've wiped out all enemies with barely a second thought. This is a cakewalk, so why not fly out in your own craft to personally take down a few pesky survivors? That's just how the pilot of the alien ship felt in Independence Day, probably right up until the point Will Smith brought him down and punched him in the face. Not only did he have the indignity of being the first alien casualty, but he was also captured and dragged to a research lab where he would be experimented upon. Y0u can hear the desperation in his/the doctor's voice when the alien finally wakes up, repeatedly asking to be released, probably so he can slink back into outer space and begin falling into an unspeakably huge shame spiral.
