Keisuke Miyagi is a Japanese immigrant and World War II veteran who, at the start of the
Karate Kid movie franchise is the maintenance man working in the apartment block in which Daniel LaRusso lives. He is a small, simple, humble and peaceful man who has a deep philosophical knowledge of life. However, he has extraordinary martial arts skills. When Daniel is getting beaten up in the first movie, Mr. Miyagi intervenes and single-handedly defeats the five attackers with ease and, ultimately, agrees to teach Daniel the ways of karate. Daniel signs up for a tournament, where he will go up against Johnny - his bully from earlier - who has been taught an unethical, vicious form of martial arts in the Cobra Kai dojo. Daniel defeats Johnny in the final and Miyagi would prove over the course of the
Karate Kid franchise that he could defeat much younger, much bigger, more ruthless men with ease using his more disciplined approach.
