10 Movie Cliffhangers That Were Ignored In The Sequel

6. A Rat Becomes Infected - Species

'90s sci-fi schlock classic Species may ultimately be best remembered for Natasha Henstridge's skin-baring performance as seductive alien-human hybrid Sil, but you might also recall that the film ended with an extremely blatant - and silly! - setup for a sequel.

Though Sil is killed, the very end of the movie shows a rat munching on one of her tentacles, causing it to quickly mutate and fire out its mutated tongue to devour another rat.

This cliffhanger suggested that Species 2 would focus on Sil's alien DNA basically spreading across the globe through animals, a tantalising idea albeit one that was promptly abandoned for, well, more of the same.

The sequel instead focuses on a gender-inversion of the original concept, as an oversexed astronaut (Justin Lazard) gets infected with alien material and a more compliant clone of Sil, Eve (Henstridge, again), is sent to stop him.
