10 Movie Deaths That Ruined Your Childhood
7. Old Yeller
It's not every day that a film can be so depressingly sad that people who haven't even seen it are upset by it. Old Yeller is pretty special in that regard. And by special obviously I mean super screwed up.
So Old Yeller is this boy's beloved dog, and as soon as you know it's about a dog, you kind of just lose hope, because there's something about watching dogs die in movies that is just so much worse than watching humans die.
One day, Old Yeller ends up contracting rabies while protecting his family from a rabid wolf, and the preteen boy in the film has to take his first step into manhood by shooting his pet. Which is just categorically not right.
Obviously, you can't shield kids from the harsh realities of the world forever, but in this case it might have been a little more appropriate for the boy's mother, an actual adult, to take on the responsibility of the mercy kill.
There's a reason men used to be trained to be dead inside, locking all their emotions away until eventually having a heart attack in their mid-40s, and it's this kind of stuff that does it.
