10 Movie Directors Who Somehow Convinced Themselves They Can Act

7. Kevin Smith

Kevin SmithPreferred Acting Style: Be Yourself (Like, Exactly Yourself) I'm not a big fan of K-Smith's movies, though I appreciate the guy's candid approach to the filmmaking process, and find him to be genuinely funny in real life (I say "real life" - I mean in YouTube videos I've seen online, okay?). Those notions aside, though, here's a director who really shouldn't attempt to be an actor at all, given that his presence is only ever really distracting, and that he - by his own admission, even - isn't very good. I mean, there's a good reason why this guy plays a character called "Silent Bob" in a bunch of his View Askewniverse movies - the less time he spends saying lines, the better. Smith's largest acting role to date probably came in the form of Die Hard 4.0, where the director played a hacker and went head to head with Bruce Willis as John McClane, but he's made appearances in lots and lots of movies over the course of his career, none of which really worked.
